Bedrooms
After months of tupperware grey skies it makes sense to keep the overall decor of your bedroom light, bright and fuss free in colour. This will create a cool and fresh feel for the hot days ahead and will work well with mirrored, neutral and pastel-shaded furniture and furnishings.
Billowing fabrics such as ivory or stone silks are like a breath of fresh air in the bedroom. Introduce deeper colours, such as sage, nutmeg or a dusky rose to create an organic vibe and provide stylish definition.
To create contrast, this season you can't go wrong with purple. From smoky dark plum to the palest delicate lavender nothing is off limits. You can go warm and cozy or soothing and cool. But try and seek out paint that is environmentally friendly and has low VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds can vaporise at room temperature causing harm to our health and to the environment).
LED lighting is everywhere. Fixtures are subtle and are often made of recycled material such as glass or paper. The look is sleek, contemporary and attractive and, even nicer, LEDs are extremely cost effective.
Natural light is even cheaper! And it's good for you. If you've got skylights or large panes of glass give them a good spring clean to let the sunshine in.
As for furniture, don't be afraid of combining the old with the new. The idea is to mix and match different styles, woods and textures while always working with the same tones (ie all pieces in white or dark wood). The simple, clean lines of chairs and benches can look stunning with the addition of cushions that are rich in texture and bold in colour.
Mirrors have a dual purpose; as well as being decorative they open up smaller spaces and bounce sunlight around the room. By placing a mirror opposite a doorway or window, the reflected light increases the perceived spaciousness of the room.
Crisp white bed linen and eco-friendly cottons decorated with trailing flower patterns, bold leaf prints or even strong blocks of this season's colours will look chic during the day and feel gorgeous come night-time.
If you're considering a major refurb on the floor then there are some beautiful renewable woods and eco-friendly carpets and rugs on the market. Carpets in particular are being made from recycled materials and have low amounts of toxic dye in them. Focus on a neutral carpet and a rug in a complementary colour.
The only forseeable problem is that your bedroom may become way too nice a place to want to leave in the mornings...
THAT old expression about spring being in the air is spot-on. The birds are belting out romantic ballads like there’s no tomorrow, the sun is flying higher in the sky and the air smells oh, so sweet. So take a deep breath and enjoy it. Now’s the time to freshen up your décor indoors and spruce up your living space outdoors.
