Green Borough Fair

This weekend is your chance to get tips and advice on all things green.

This Sunday (February 26th) the Green Borough Fair will return to St Mark’s Church Community Centre in Brickhill for the second year running.

All are welcome to attend the event and Bedford Borough residents are encouraged to come and find out more about getting involved in local environmental improvement projects, or to gain helpful tips to save money by adopting a more sustainable lifestyle.

The aim of this year’s event is to provide information and offer encouragement and support to community groups, schools and individuals to raise general awareness of greener living and getting active outdoors.

A range of groups will be on hand to offer advice and ideas for reducing waste and saving energy. There will be opportunities to get involved with projects and activities such as creating community gardens and allotments, projects for Eco-Schools, local volunteer and conservation projects, and running a local ‘In Bloom’ campaign. There will also be demonstrations, displays, stands, a children’s game room and refreshments.

There will also be a chance to learn more about new council projects from volunteers at the Friends of Mowsbury Hillfoot and Puntnoe Woods, who will be happy to talk to anyone interested in conservation work.

Visitors will have the chance to learn about various schemes from community gardening and allotments to recycling and wildlife projects. There will also be advice for visitors interested in starting a local campaign in their area to help improve their local environment.

Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The council is committed to creating a greener borough. We are investing in schemes to reduce our energy consumption from our buildings, creating a pioneering hydro power facility on the Great Ouse and we are investing in local carbon cutting projects through our Climate Change Fund.

“However, we also want to work with local residents and support them in reducing their impact on the environment. A few simple steps can make a serious difference to your emissions as well as your wallet.”

The Green Borough Fair takes place this Sunday from 12pm – 4pm on Sunday at the centre in Brickhill. Entry is free.

THAT old expression about spring being in the air is spot-on. The birds are belting out romantic ballads like there’s no tomorrow, the sun is flying higher in the sky and the air smells oh, so sweet. So take a deep breath and enjoy it. Now’s the time to freshen up your décor indoors and spruce up your living space outdoors.
