Let There Be Light
Electric
Any electric lighting will need to be planned at a very early stage of the design process and installed by a qualified electrician. Light pathways and steps with clever low-voltage LED lights or look for unusual, sculptural lighting solutions which will become features in your ideal outdoor living lifestyle.
Solar lighting
Solar lamps are a quick and easy way to install light in your garden design as no wiring is required and the lights often come on stakes, ready to plunge into the ground, or can be hung as lanterns from pergolas or overhanging branches. Use solar lights to highlight gloomy corners or uneven paths but don’t expect to be blinded by the glare; the illumination will be subtle, at best.
Candles, lanterns and flares
The warm glow from a candle will add magic to any outdoor space. Line paths with votives, hang lanterns from trellises and branches and use flairs in flowerbeds for impact at parties. Candles scented with citronella will keep biting insects at bay.
Braziers and chimineas
Add real wow factor to your alfresco living with an open fire. They come in all shapes and sizes so you should be able to find something to suit all budgets. Not only will they provide a focus for a large outdoor space but the ambient light and warmth from the flames will add that extra ‘something’ to evening entertaining.
THAT old expression about spring being in the air is spot-on. The birds are belting out romantic ballads like there’s no tomorrow, the sun is flying higher in the sky and the air smells oh, so sweet. So take a deep breath and enjoy it. Now’s the time to freshen up your décor indoors and spruce up your living space outdoors.
