Ex-Luton South MP Margaret Moran cried as she appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court this morning.
Ms Moran, 56, faces 21 charges in relation to claims she made for parliamentary expenses with a value of more than £80,000.
The former Labour MP is accused of claiming for a home in her constituency and one in Southampton and submitting forged invoices.
The charges include an allegation that Ms Moran dishonestly claimed £22,500 to repair dry rot at her Southampton home.
She only spoke to confirm her name and date of birth and was heard to cry in the dock.
She is next due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on October 28.
In October 2009, our sister paper Luton & Dunstable Express launched a campaign calling for Ms Moran to resign as MP in light of her parliamentary expenses claims. She did not, although she was barred from standing in the 2010 general election.
