Christmas is special for lots of reasons.

Life seems jollier and more colourful, there are all kinds of tasty things to eat and drink and, if you’re lucky, there will be presents!

But there’s one other thing that marks Christmas out as not only a special but a magical time.

A visit to the theatre to see a Full House show guarantees an adventure in a world of make-believe and magic - with a touch of spectacle and sparkle thrown in for good measure.

Last year, the Bedfordshire-based company brought the story of the Snow Dog to family audiences in Luton; this Christmas they’re back with a new take on the Brothers’ Grimm fairytale, Rapunzel.

But you can forget any thoughts of Gothic Germanic castles and dark, creepy forests; the setting of this Rapunzel is more Midsomer Murders than Frankenstein’s laboratory.

The village green in Brimblebottom is at the heart of the community and that’s where you’ll find the Brimblebottom Ladies.

The ladies do all the things that you would expect of an upstanding group of local stalwarts; they make jam they create floral displays and they gossip.

Just at the moment, however, they are trying to raise funds to get the village clock, situated in a tower overlooking the green, working again.

Unbeknownst to them, a wicked witch is holding a feisty young lady captive in the tower (not only that but it looks as though she is short of a pair of scissors up there).

Observing all the goings-on are a pair of bouncing bunnies. The bunnies narrate the action and tuck into a tasty snack of the Brimblebottom Ladies’ floral arrangements while they’re at it.

So what is it about this show and this company that makes a trip to the theatre in the holidays such a fun prospect?

Director Harriet Hardie says: “The story of Rapunzel starts off at the summer fete, travels through time to the autumn produce show and ends up in a winter wonderland at Christmas.

“The rabbits are playful and fun, the music is toe-tappingly catchy and the whole show has a feel-good Christmassy atmosphere.

“We’ve got a giant witch puppet, masks and the costumes are so amazing... Full House has been creating Christmas shows for 11 years now and these really are the best yet!”

Well, Harriet would say that wouldn’t she? Except, I have seen Full House shows and they really do sprinkle magic dust around a theatre especially at Christmas.
