First-half firecrackers see Luton prgress
LUTON 25 BEDFORD ATHLETIC 3
East Midlands Cup quarter final
An efficient performance from Luton saw them brush Bedford Ath aside 25-3 in a repeat of last year’s final.
Luton went into the tie on the back of Mike Coogan’s departure but their performance belayed any hint of disharmony.
Jake Hobbs, Freddy Cook, Alex Sutherland and Aidan Kenny all scored points for the home side with James Mortimer scoring for Bedford.
The game was a wellcontested and entertaining affair.
New signings Nick Stevens and David Irvine started and it did not take long for the home side to get going.
Hobbs went over on seven minutes for an unconverted opening try.
Cook then scored another try, with Kenny converting, to extend the lead.
But Mortimer then kicked a penalty goal as the Bedford side attempted to gain a foothold in the game.
However, their efforts were in vain as further points from a Sutherland try and Kenny penalty saw Luton go in at half-time with a commanding 20-3 lead.
The second period was a much tamer affair, the only score of the half coming through an uncoverted try from Kenny.
But there were still positives for the home side as Coddie Medway made his return from injury alongside new acquisition Sam Collins to give Luton a southern hemisphere feel.
