An angry Gary Brabin slammed his players' performance as they meekly capitulated to a 1-0 defeat at Barrow.
The result saw a 14-game unbeaten streak come to a crashing end and, with Blue Square Bet Premier front two Wrexham and Fleetwood both winning, all but ended aspirations of them finishing in the only automatic promotion spot.
A second half Alex-Ray Harvey strike did the damage and, save for a John Paul Kissock free-kick struck straight at Shaun Pearson, Luton could not fashion a shot on goal, let alone a reply.
Brabin said: "I can't put it into words at the moment. Anger is probably the one but I'm disappointed at being beaten."
He added: "I'm disappointed we haven't done enough to win the game.
"I still feel very angry for the supporters who have travelled up - they've had to witness that.
"We knew it was going to be a tough game and the conditions don't help. They are very direct and put us under a lot of pressure but we've got to big enough to cope with that.
"I just don't think we done enough to take the game to them.
"Once they won the toss and I knew the wind would be stronger in the second half and we'd have to take advantage in the second half but I don't think we did.
"We played a tempo which is way below what we expect."
The game turned into a tetchy affair with Town midfielder Andre Boucaud appearing to be on the wrong end of an off-the-ball incident and the manager admitted he substituted the midfielder to protect him after he picked up a caution.
"That's disappointing and I know Boucaud got sent off here for York so whether that's carried on from the last game I don't know but he seemed to be singled out for some treatment.
"In the end we took him off as a precaution."
He added: "We've got to rise above decisions that go against us and stuff like that. I don't think decisions went our way and one of the tackles I thought was an illegal two-footed one."
The results left the Hatters 14 points behind leaders Fleetwood but Brabin refused to rule out automatic promotion.
"We are always playing catch-up but we certainly won't be giving up," he said, adding: "We've made it even harder with this disappointing performance and result but we've got to kick on and find that form.
"We've got to get stronger and learn from this because it wasn't good enough.
"We've certainly got to better than that if we've got any aspirations of getting promoted."
