Best man for the job

Well, you’re hardly going to want to choose the worst man available are you? Not unless you have a death wish or insecurity so great that you need to prove to your wife-to-be that she could have done worse for herself.

So, what should you ideally be looking for in a best man? And what is it wise to run screaming from at the first available opportunity?

Make sure you choose a best man who has the potential to look almost (but not quite) as smart as you will on the big day, thus avoiding evil looks and an ear-bashing later from the bride.

bestman and rings
Can you rely on your best man to guard the rings with his life, organise a stag do to rival all others and write and then deliver an Oscar-winning performance at the reception? If the answer is no, be brutal; ditch him in favour of a safer bet.

Pick a martial arts’ expert. If that’s not practical, make sure he knows that, come the stag do, your safety is his priority – even at the expense of his own health and welfare. On a stag night, you’re never too far away from a group of tanked up yobs,  roaming the late night clubs just looking for trouble.

If the guy you’ve got lined up for the job is known to swear like a trooper or prone to telling anecdotes about you that involve previous girlfriends, romantic escapades with farm animals or that time on holiday when you got married to a Thai lady-boy, STOP RIGHT NOW! You’re getting married, you don’t want to have her filing for divorce by tea-time, now do you?

If you have to delegate the important task of being your best man to someone who, though they may not be as close a buddy to you, is at least sober and reliable, then do so. You can always keep your dear old mate on as a figurehead. By doing so, you may just save both your friendship and your impending marriage from an instant and irredeemable break-up.

THERE’S something very special about a spring wedding.  It’s the favourite time of year for couples to start out on their new life together. But whenever you’re planning to get married, you’ll find the perfect venue for your big day and all the important services you might need to call on to help you through the process - from engagement party to honeymoon - right here in our wedding web pages.
