Let me entertain you
If you’ve got a spare two million pounds, you can ask Elton John to play at your wedding. He may not accept but at least you are hovering around the ball park figure at which he might show an interest.
For a more low-key diversion, a quick browse on the internet or a flick through Yellow Pages will unveil an almost infinite choice of artistes and entertainers ready and willing to step up to the plate to make your ceremony and reception the best celebration ever.
Like everything else about your wedding, it’s really all down to personal choice. If your dream has always been to walk up the aisle to the accompaniment of a lone harpist and to sip champagne and nibble at canapes to the gentle strains of a string quartet playing Mozart then your command will be the wish of a bunch of eager musicians.
If, on the other hand, a heavy metal tribute act rocks your boat then bring on the sonic sound system and the earplugs for granny.
But what about that grand old romantic tradition, the first dance? You may not be a Kara Tointon or a Matt Baker but that’s no reason why you shouldn’t seize your moment, sashay onto the dance floor and act like it’s your 15 minutes of fame in the spotlight – because, of course, it is.
It doesn’t matter if the song that is special to you has been done before – over and over again. Depending on your point of view, Aerosmith’s I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing is either a classic or so done to death it drives you nuts.
You could go straight for the kill with a pure and unashamed love ballad: Lionel Richie and Diana Ross’ Endless Love; Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You and Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do (I Do It For You). They’ve all been tried and tested over the years and haven’t failed yet to pull on the heartstrings. If you want a big, soppy ballad, then have a big soppy ballad! Sometimes, nothing says: ‘I love you’ like an OTT rom-anthem.
When the music stops, the magic begins. If you feel like pulling a rabbit out of the hat then there are magicians, stage hypnotists, escapologists, jugglers, cartoonists and children’s entertainers by the score who will put on a great show for your assembled guests and fill any hiatus between afternoon and evening ‘dos’. There are even Basil Fawlty and Manuel look-a-likes who will MC the proceedings and throw in a hilarious comedy double act too. Just don’t mention the war.
