VIntage Scoops

CELEBRITIES, these days, come in all shapes and sizes. Betty, for example, has her own fan following which would not be out of the ordinary if she were a movie star or even the winner of X-Factor. But Betty is an ice-cream van with way more character than what’s her name from Corrie-enders or what’s his face who was the Strictly Dancing on Ice runner-up.

Betty’s luck was in from the moment her former owner put her up for sale on e-bay. She was bought and lovingly restored by Hayley Southwood, a nursery nurse from Whaddon near Milton Keynes.

“Three years ago” says Hayley “my mum had passed away aged only 53 and I was at my absolute lowest. I had had enough of the 9 to 5 routine and I suddenly realised that there was more to life. I decided to combine my two great loves – vintage-inspired style and ice-cream – and indulge in a bit of pure escapism. We take Betty to all kinds of events – from wedding receptions to village fetes to children’s parties and corporate events. We deck her out in colourful bunting and serve Beechdean Dairy ice creams in special flavours, soft drinks in retro glass bottles and old-fashioned sweets out of traditional jars.”

But now Hayley is trying something a little bit different. Betty will be making a special appearance at Cruck Barn, Bradwell Abbey on February 26 at Mrs Scoops & Little Miss G’s Vintage Wedding Fayre.

“I’ve met so many creative and talented people who are involved in some way with the Wedding industry” says Hayley. “From quirky stationery design to fabulous 50’s children’s clothes to amazing cakes and so we decided to hold a wedding fayre with a difference. There are vintage inspired exhibitors and craftspeople coming from all over the UK as well as the London-based bridal designer Johanna Hehir who will be showcasing her Winter 2012 collection. And there’ll lots of Wedding bloggers reporting on the day as it happens! Are you ready Milton Keynes?”
