Wedding Guests Dos and Donts
Wedding Guests everywhere must take these solemn vows if they are to respectfully attend any Wedding ceremony or party. Repeat after me…
I DO
MAKE AN EFFORT - Number One and most shiny of the golden rules. The last thing a bride wants in the wedding photos is a congregation who look like they’re off to a festival, dig out the hats and silky gloves ‘cos you’re off to a wedding.
WEAR SOMETHING COMFORTABLE – particularly relevant for those guests in for the long-haul. Those sparkly stilettos might look perfect with your frock, but they will punish any budding ‘dancing queen’ come 7.30pm
KEEP COMMENTS TO MYSELF - You never know who is related to who…remember that every aspect of the day will be a reflection of the bride and groom’s personal taste. So no shooting your mouth off if you think the buffet was just a mountain of sausage rolls.
MATCH MY HANDBAG WITH MY SHOES – applies to all formal settings and you know you will be kicking yourself (with your mismatched shoe) if you don’t.
GO FROM DAY TO NIGHT WITH EASE - wear your jacket during the day and unveil a glamorous strapless dress for the evening do (sedentary guests who are stuck to their chairs good for guarding stray garments)
BE RESPECTFUL OF ‘THE FIRST DANCE’ – even if you are desperate to throw some shapes for heaven’s sake wait until the smoochy number is over first, you risk looking disrespectful (and stupid) otherwise.
I DON’T
TRY AND MATCH THE COLOUR OF THE WEDDING – doubtless the mother of the bride will have had the same idea and the last thing you want is an irate woman in chiffon.
BE FASHIONABLY LATE – regular party going etiquette DOES NOT APPLY to a wedding. NOBODY will think you are cool and you can forget a free drink at the reception.
WEAR WHITE – even if it’s in the sale AND your size! If it’s white it’s not right. The bride will not thank you and you will feel a fool.
DON’T DARE TO BARE – not the time or the place to seek the limelight. Weddings are elegant affairs and women should dress accordingly – tarts are not welcome.
WEAR STILETTOS IF THE WEDDING IS OUTSIDE – they might be sexy, but sinking three inches whilst holding a champagne flute is definitely not.
WEAR BLACK OR SEQUINS - to the day ceremony. If it is in summer colours should be bright and breezy. Even in winter, save the black dress for eh hem…another occasion.
BRING UNEXPECTED GUESTS – the ‘big’ day comes with a ‘big’ price tag and letting your bezzy mate tag along ‘cos he is a brilliant dancer will not sit well with the bride and groom. Just ensure you only bring a plus one, if you have been invited to.
